The increasing complexity and growing scope of government and industry regulations are placing the spotlight on how IT organizations conduct their day-to-day activities to protect proprietary customer and financial information. IT must establish the appropriate control framework over systems and processes involving this data and demonstrate to external auditors and government agencies that the organization continually and consistently practices these controls across every transaction. Automating the tasks connected with compliance would extend IT staff capacity and cut costs that accompany manual processes concerning policy monitoring, incident response and adherence documentation.
The year of 2007 set records for merger & acquisition (M&A) activity worldwide. According to Bloomberg, a record $4 trillion in deals were announced in 2007. The numbers by vertical are impressive. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, there were a record 207 deals in industrial manufacturing (i.e., industrial machinery, rubber & plastic products, fabricated metal products, and electronic & electrical equipment) during 2007, up from 159 deals in 2006. While research from Bloomberg and PWC shows the pace of M&A activity has slowed this year, enterprises worldwide are still digesting last year’s binge. PWC also predicts that M&A activity in industrial manufacturing in 2008 will run close to that seen in 2006. Download this paper to learn more.

Virtualization and Disk Performance

<date>2008-10-30</date>

Virtualization does have its dangers, as it incurs greater stress on physical resources. While under utilization of CPU may be a driving factor to virtualize servers, other hardware resources may become overtaxed. Given that a host system has limited ability (depends on application) to page memory used by the guest systems, the most recognized bottleneck to address is physical memory (RAM). Options to programmatically alleviate memory bottlenecks incur performance issues when the disk is re-introduced. Another major component and perhaps less acknowledged is the disk subsystem. In many cases, depending the purpose and application of the guest/virtual systems, the disk bottleneck will be the most significant barrier to performance.<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument>
